Aug. 23, 2007 - CUMBY - After a successful workout in their first scrimmage of the year last week, the Cumby Trojans prepare of wrap up the offseason with a scrimmage against the Era Hornets at 6:30 p.m. today at Trojan Field.

Head coach Kent Hawthorne said the Trojans were able to get out of the first scrimmage with no injuries and he hopes the team will stay healthy this week.

With this being the final scrimmage of the summer, Hawthorne said the teams will go into more of a game situation as they will play a live half to end the scrimmage session.

"This scrimmage against Era, we are going to play quite a bit more than last week," the coach said. "We are going to go 10 offense and 10 defense with the varsity first. We will then come in and go with the second bunch of kids with 10 offense and 10 defense and then come back with the varsity for 10 offense and 10 defense and then the second team. Finally, we will do a live half with a dead punt and go through the motions."

He said the team will go through special teams with the extra point attempts if touchdowns are scored during the scrimmage.

"We will not have our kickoff or kickoff return teams," he said. "We will have the extra point teams when the teams score."

With Cumby starting teacher inservice days this week and the players getting ready for the first day of school next week, the coaching staff had to rearrange practices for this week.

He said earlier in the week the team held two practices on Monday and only one practice session on Tuesday and Wednesday to get the players prepared for the scrimmage against Era.

"We started inservice this week and have some other things going so we are going to bring them in and lift them on Friday and then watch the video of the scrimmage," the coach said. "The coaches will then go and scout Alba-Golden and Fruitvale Friday night and prepare for Alba-Golden next week. "

Notes: With this being the final scrimmage of the preseason, the Trojans will prepare to open Week Zero play at Trojan Field against the Alba-Golden Panthers at 7:30 p.m. Friday. ... The Panthers defeated Cumby 13-6 last year in a game where the Trojans had 16 penalties for 185 yards in the game.
