Eagles playing in three-team scrimmage tonight: Como-Pickton to work on passing game against Big Sandy and Sabine

Aug. 23, 2007 - COMO - With one more week remaining before the start of the regular season, the Como-Pickton Eagles have one final tuneup tonight at Ron Heflin Field.

The Eagles will take part in a three-team scrimmage against the Big Sandy Wildcats and the Sabine Cardinals starting with junior varsity action at 6 p.m. The varsity is scheduled to begin around 7 p.m.

"We were going to try and go a running quarter with Big Sandy, but he called me and said he may not have enough people to go the whole time," CP head coach Paul Tullis said. "If he can't, then hopefully Sabine will stay and go some more after that.

"The players are still excited and looking good during workouts. I think the enthusiasm and the fire that these kids have are the things I will be looking for. If we go out there and take care of us, then it doesn't matter what the other teams do."

Tullis said the junior varsity will start the scrimmage with 10 plays as the CP offensive unit will scrimmage the Cardinals defense, while the Big Sandy offense will take on the CP defensive unit at the end of their scrimmage.

In varsity action, the CP defensive unit will open their scrimmage portion against the Big Sandy offense for 15 plays, and then the offense will wrap up the 15-play series against the Sabine defense. The first teamers will then come back for another set of plays later as the CP offense takes on Big Sandy for 10 plays and then the defense wraps up the series against the Sabine offense.

"We are going to work on our passing game more during this scrimmage," Tullis said. "We are mainly going to be a ball-control running offense, but we also need to work on the passing game some more."

He said fans should expect to see more out of quarterbacks Austin Darby and Noe Tellez throughout the scrimmage to get them in sync with their receivers before next week's opener at Rivercrest.

"I think we did a great job at the scrimmage against Cumby," Tullis said. "Defensively, we are going to work on some different things with the motion and all of that stuff and work on what we are going to do."

In between the first team action, the Eagles second team offense will take on Big Sandy for 10 plays, followed by the Sabine offense against the CP defense to end the second team series.
