Lady Owls whip Edgewood in opener

Aug. 14, 2007 - YANTIS - The senior-laden Yantis Lady Owls started the season with a bang in a 3-1 win over Class 2A Edgewood. The Lady Owls got a measure of revenge against the Lady Bulldogs who beat them twice last season.

Edgewood took the first match 22-25, but the Lady Owls used an overall stout defense and numerous tough serves from Isy Reyna, Amanda McKinney and Jamie Gilliland to come back and record wins of 25-16, 26-24 and 25-21. The Lady Owls fought back from behind in the final two matches.

Reyna hit for seven aces and added seven kills. McKinney, the team's only junior, added four kills and had three digs. Gilliland added five aces, three kills and three digs.

Baylee Gilbreath had a solid game at the net with six kills. Libero Mackenzie Apel had two great digs from the back line and made several defensive stops. Christina Tauzen added two kills and a dig.

The team will host Hughes Springs today with three matches beginning with a freshman game at 4 p.m.
