Wildcat Notes

By BOBBY "BUTCH" BURNEY | News-Telegram Sports Editor

On the first day of full pads for the Wildcats, the sun came out in full force to greet them. While some of the mornings have been seasonably cooler than normal with a breeze, Friday's practice was hot and still with temperatures in the low 90s when practice ended at 10:30 a.m.

... After going through position drills in full pads, the Wildcat varsity and JV started scrimmaging at about 9:10 a.m. The offense drew first blood when senior receiver Jeff Beck took a swing pass from junior quarterback Tyrick Rollison and scored from about 20 yards out.

... The defense, however, didn't allow another TD. Instead, senior cornerback Dalton Abner stepped in front of a hitch pass, intercepted it and returned it for a score. A few plays later, junior safety Johnny McSheffery gathered in a tipped pass for an interception and returned it for a TD, also.

... The hardest hit was made by junior cornerback Darrell Franklin, who popped receiver Chris Thompson on a screen pass as soon as Thompson caught the ball. ... Defensive linemen Rodney Evans and Tyler Francis combined for a sack.

... On the JV side, the niftiest run came from receiver Anthony Mills, who turned a bubble pass into a wriggling, side-stepping TD run. ... The hardest hit on JV came courtesy of safety Triston Crook.
