Owls clinch playoff berth
from staff reports
April 28, 2007 - YANTIS - Behind the steady arm of Daniel Cerratani and some solid defense, the Yantis Owls moved into the first round of the state playoffs with a 10-0 whitewashing of Fruitvale on Friday.
The Owls will play the Overton Mustangs in the best two-out-of- three series at Lindale with Game 1 set for 7 p.m. Thursday. Game 2 is scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday, and game 3 will be at noon Saturday if necessary.
Cerretani raised his record to 5-0 for the year and 4-0 in District 19-A by giving up just two bloop singles to short right-center. The sophomore struck out seven Bobcats.
Lead-off batter Terry Thompson had two hits and scored three runs for Yantis. Cerretani added two hits with Randy Smith and Jacob Burgess each getting one hit.
In the fourth inning with a runner on for Fruitvale, second baseman Jordan Davis went deep in the hole to his right and tossed to shortstop Matthew Crayton, who fired the Thompson at first to complete the double play and shut down any hope the Bobcats had of a rally.
"I am really happy to be in the playoffs again. This team has been through so much. Bryan Green and Jacob Burgess have come out and helped us and having Crayton back is certainly a plus," Yantis coach Larry Tucker said. "I sure was hoping to win that toss and have a one game series, but we will just make do with what we've got. We have a lot of work to do before Thursday. Overton is an extremely talented team and has two great pitchers. I also heard their shortstop was unbelievable."
