Yantis boys take third at region golf; all five back for next year

April 25, 2007 - NACOGDOCHES - The Yantis Owls overtook James Bowie to earn bronze medals and a third place finish in the Class A, Region III golf tournament at Nacogdoches' Piney Woods Golf Club Monday and Tuesday.

Yantis Coach Michael Alphin was pleased with the finish and excited about the future.

"These young men have worked very hard to bring the Yantis golf program a long way in the past three years," Alphin said. "I am excited because we had one junior and four sophomores playing on the team. We also have four other good golfers who will return. We expect to be back next year to give LaPoynor and Lindsay a run for the title."

Cord Burnett shot 86-88 for a 174 and overall 14th place; Kenny Nunez came in 23rd with 95-89-184; Darren Burgess 90-98-188 finished 26th; Daniel Cerretani finished 40th with 102-100-202; and Cory Ward finished 61st with 113-110-223.

LaPoynor easily outdistanced the pack with a two-day total of 661 followed by Lindsay at 715 and Yantis at 748. Campbell finished ninth in the final standings.

There were a total of 16 teams and 136 golfers at the event.

"When I started bringing kids here five years ago we were just happy to be here and never have finished higher than seventh. Coach Alphin and this group have really raised the expectations and they play to win," Yantis athletic director Larry Tucker said. "I am extremely proud of this group and Coach Alphin."

Medalist Dustin Clements of North Hopkins finished 51st with scores of 104-110 for a 214 total.

Girls

Yantis' Amanda McKinney competed as a medalist in the girls competition, finishing 27th in the individual standings with a 119-126-245 total.

North Hopkins' Kayla Williams, competing with the Lady Panthers' team, had the best individual finish of any Hopkins County golfers, coming in 23rd with a two-round total of 244. She shot 126 on Monday and 118 on Tuesday.

Saltillo's girls had the highest finish of any county team, placing eighth in the team standings with a 553-544-1,097 total, and North Hopkins was 10th with a 571-539-1,110 total for the 36-hole tournament.

Saltillo's Cassie Prather shot a 133-129-262 to come in 41st, followed by Candace Prather with a 140-128-268, Haley Knotts with a 126-144-270, and Shayna Floyd with a 154-143-297.

For North Hopkins, after Williams came Cheyenne Brown in 56th place with a 144-139-283, Juila Tamsma with a 150-141-291, Holli Argenbright with a 152-141-293, and Jessica Harry with a 151-152-303.
