CPHS crowns four district track and field champions last week

April 19, 2007 - Como-Pickton crowned four district champions at the 20-2A track and field meet last week, and will send 12 athletes and three relays to the regional meet.
The C-P girls will advance eight individuals and two relays to the Class 2A, Region III meet in Palestine next weekend. The boys, meanwhile, had two boys and one relay qualify. The top three finishers in each event qualified for regional.
The top performers for the girls were distance runner Bethanie Stinson, who won both the 1,600 and 3,200-meter runs, discus thrower Maci Kight and the 4x200-meter relay team that won its race.
For the boys, Harold Crater qualified in two jumping events and Alex Mowat won the pole vault.
Stinson, a three-time state qualifier in cross country and a state qualifier last year in track, won the 1,600 in a time of 5 minutes, 26.76 seconds, and captured first in the 3,200 with a clocking of 12:04.92.
Kight, a sophomore, took first in the discus with a throw of 105 feet, 4 1/2 inches.
In other field events, Saxe Daugherty placed third in the long jump with a 14-1 leap, Deanna Garrett was the silver medalist in the pole vault at 9-6, Courtney Dulude placed third in the shot put with a 31-11 effort, and Samantha Jones was third in the triple jump at 32-5.
In track events, along with Stinson and the 800 relay, the 4x400 relay was second in a time of 4:36.87, and two runners qualified in the 800-meter run: Alma Lara was second in a time of 2:50.38 and Margarita Ledesma was third in 2:51.79.
For the Eagles, Mowat won the pole vault with an effort of 13-0. Harold Carter placed second in both the high jump (5-10) and the long jump (19-11).
The 4x100-meter relay team captured third in a time of 45.99.
