April 13, 2007 - MOUNT PLEASANT - The Sulphur Springs distance runners set the bar high for the rest of the team in Wednesday's first race at the District 11-4A meet. The bookended their accomplishments on Thursday.

After sweeping the 3,200-meter run on Wednesday, the Wildcats went 1-2-3 in the 1,600 on Thursday. In between, half-miler Kasie Carrell and hurdler Daymon Nash each won their premiere events, while sprinter Jeff Pitts and the 4x200 relay team also qualified for the regional meet by finishing third.

In all, 10 Wildcats in six events qualified for the Class 4A, Region II track and field meet in Denton on April 27-28.

The Wildcats finished third in the overall district standings with 118.5 points. Texas High won the meet with 216.5.

There was no question who would win the distance races. Senior Graham Northcutt earned his second gold medal of the meet by finishing first in the 1,600 with a time of 4 minutes, 26.2 seconds. He was followed by junior Tate Ramirez in second at 4:35.1 - it was Ramirez's second silver-medal performance. Carrell was third in 4:43.3.

Northcutt's time was about 7 seconds off his school-record time of 4:19.63, but it will position him well for the regional meet in two weeks.

Earlier in the day, Carrell easily won the 800-meter dash with a solid time of 2:00.1 seconds. He led from the 200-meter mark until the finish line, crossing the first lap in about 59 seconds. Tyler Wilson placed sixth in the event with a 2:08.8 clocking.

This will be the second regional meet for Carrell, who was seventh in the 800 last year at Denton.

The very next race after Carrell won his gold, Nash lined up in Lane 5 for a shot at redemption. Last year, Nash was a favorite to medal in the 110-meter hurdles, but was tripped up when another runner's hurdle bounced into his lane.

This year, there was no such drama as Nash got off to a good start and was clearly the leader midway through the race. He finished in a season-best time of 14.96 seconds. Teammate Jon Young was sixth in the race in 16.07. Young also placed fifth in the 300 hurdles with a clocking of 43.66, his best time of the year.

Pitts then ran in three of the next five races, qualifying for regional in two of them.

He placed sixth in the 100-meter dash in a very tight race in which 7/100ths of a second separated third from sixth place. But, PItts got his first ticket to regional punched in the next race when he anchored the 4x200-meter relay team, pulling them from fourth into third place with a total time of 1:30.46.

He teamed with Nash, Chris Thompson and Daqualin Evans on the relay, though Clayton Vaughn will run at the regional meet in place of Nash so Nash can concentrate on the hurdles.

Then, in the 200, Pitts ran a time of 22.82 seconds to get third place and another regional berth.

The 4x400 relay team almost qualified for regional as Northcutt ran a strong final leg to pull to within a step of Lindale for third place. Northcutt, Ramirez and Carrell each ran a leg on the mile relay the very next race after running the mile. Nash was the other relay leg.

The 4x100 relay team of Quenton Long, Thompson, Darrell Franklin and Evans placed fifth in 45.06 seconds.

Girls

The Lady Cats didn't have anyone qualify for regional, but had three girls place on Thursday.

Junior Kelsey Evans ran a time of 2:33.82 in the 800, which was good enough for sixth place. Also placing sixth was sophomore Katie Dodd in the 1,600.

The 4x200 relay team placed fifth. it consisted of Molly Smith, Ashanti Ivery, Trashonda Green and Mia Taylor.

Finishing sixth was the 4x400 relay team of Bonnie Grafton, Evans, Ivery and Green.

Overall, SSHS was sixth in the standings with 14 points. Lindale won the girls division with 177.

The junior varsity and middle school results will be in the weekend edition.
