Cumby pulls off upset of district-leading Saltillo

From Staff Reports

April 6, 2007 - CUMBY - The Cumby Trojans topped the District 17-A leading Saltillo Lions, 5-2, on Thursday behind a gutsy pitching performance by senior Jeffery Smith.

Smith (5-1) struck out nine and scattered five hits.

"We gave up two runs in the top of the first innning, one earned, and then Jeffery settled down and began to rely on his off-speed pitches, especially his change, to keep their hitters off balance," said Cumby head coach Scott Mabe. "He showed a lot of poise on the mound, his experience and leadership really paid off today. That was a win we really needed."

Offensively, Kris Stanford had a big day, going 2-for-3 with an RBI double and scoring twice. Tanner Gomez and Jake Vann also had run-scoring hits for the Trojans, Vann's a double in the fifth.

"The bottom of our lineup did an excellent job of working the pitch countand getting on base, putting the ball in play," Mabe said. "Our guys' ability to run the bases really helped out today. Jake reallly put pressure on their defense with his speed.

Cumby (11-8, 4-2) hosts Campbell at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday. Saltillo falls to 4-1.
