Saltillo on top of 17-A baseball; Miller Grove wins

April 4, 2007 - Saltillo remained unbeaten in District 17-A baseball, while Cumby kept itself in the playoff race with a run-rule victory on Tuesday.

Over in District 19-A, Miller Grove won an important match-up with Martins Mill.

BASEBALL

Saltillo 12, North Hopkins 0

SALTILLO - The Saltillo Lions improved to 6-2 overall and 3-0 in District 17-A by scoring four runs in the first, second and fourth innings.

Chase Carr went 2-for-2 with a two-run home run, Miles Payne went 2-for-3 and Derek McClure, Nolan Garmon and Maikel Groenewold each recorded a hit for the Lions.

Carr picked up the win with a complete game three-hitter and struck out seven batters.

For North Hopkins (3-1), Lorenzo Rivera, Joe Smiddy and Bradley Ball each went 1-for-3 in the game.

Clements took the loss, giving up four runs on two hits with four walks.

Cumby 23, Roxton 2

CUMBY - Cumby pounded out 14 hits, including Josh Rodriguez's sixth home run of the season in a rout of the Roxton Lions Tuesday.

Rodriguez was 4-for-4 including a triple and had four RBI. Brixx Hawthorne added two hits and two RBI and Devon Owen had two hits and an RBI double in the first inning to get the scoring started.

Kris Stanford, (3-2, 2-0) picked up his second district win allowing only three hits, striking out seven and walking only one, in a game shortened to four innings by run rule.

Cumby (10-8, 3-2)hosts Saltillo at 4:30 p.m. Thursday to begin the second round of District 17-A.

Miller Grove 5, Martins Mill 3

MARTINS MILL - Brady Harmon struck out 11 batters, and Reece Evans and Jeramie Burns led the way at the plate for Miller Grove as the Hornets picked up an important District 19-A victory.

Evans went 2-for-4 with a two-run home run in the third, and Burns went 3-for-4 with a two-run double in the fifth.

Reece's home run came with Seth Roberts aboard and gave the Hornets a 2-1 lead. After Martins Mill retook a 3-2 advantage, Burns' again gave Miller Grove the lead with his double, which scored Harmon and Aaron Baylus.

Baylus added the Hornets' final run in the seventh when he stole home as the MM pitcher tried to pick Burns off first.

Harmon pitched the complete game, giving up six hits and two walks.

SOFTBALL

Saltillo 17, Sulphur Bluff 7

SALTILLO - Winter Stevens led the Lady Lions with a single, double, home run and two RBI in their win over Sulphur Bluff to improve to 2-2 in District 17-A.

Teammates Emily White and Bekah Rogers each had three hits as Rogers had two RBI, while White recorded one for Saltillo. Chloe Roberts had two hits and one RBI and picked up the win in the circle.

Roberts came on in relief of starter White and gave up no runs on two hits with two walks and six strikeouts in four innings of work.

No individual stats were available for Sulphur Bluff.
