|From Staff Reports|
Sept. 30, 2006 - HONEY GROVE - After a scoreless first quarter, the Honey Grove Warriors scored in each of the last three periods to pull away from Cooper, 32-6, Friday in the District 16-2A opener for both teams.
Honey Grove (3-2) scored two TDs in both the second and third quarters to go up 26-0 before Cooper (1-4) got on the board, courtesy of a Gaylon Bacy touchdown run.
Statistically, the game appeared to be much closer than the final score as Honey Grove only outgained Cooper, 229 total yards to 217, but the Bulldogs turned the ball over three times (while Honey Grove lost just one fumble) and were hit with seven penalties (compared to three for the Warriors).
Honey Grove quarterback Hudson Millford carried much of the offensive load, throwing for a pair of touchdowns - 15 yards to Xavier Akins and 24 yards to Bryan White, both in the third quarter - and running for another score in the final period. He ended up with 80 yards passing and 15 yards rushing.
Bryon Finney got the scoring going 30 seconds into the second period when he hit paydirt from 60 yards out. Finney was controlled for much of the game, ending 83 yards on eight carries.
For the Bulldogs, Bacy led the team with 119 yards rushing on 20 carries, including a 12-yard touchdown run with 8:59 to play in the fourth quarter for Cooper's only score.
Ron Morris added 51 yards on 12 carries, and quarterback Travis Williams completed 6-of-13 passes for 58 yards.
Defensively, Ellis Hinsley led the Bulldogs with nine tackles and Chris Burden added five. Garrett McGraw came up with a fumble recovery for Cooper.
The Bulldogs travel to DeKalb next week for another 16-2A contest.
