NH girls win their own meet, NH boys finish second

Sept. 18, 2006 - BIRTHRIGHT - Runners from Hopkins County schools dominated the girls division of the North Hopkins Invitational Cross Country Meet on Saturday, and the boys didn't do too shabbily either.

North Hopkins easily won the girls team competition, and NHHS senior Sabra Thomas was the individual winner of the two-mile race in 12 minutes, 33 seconds. Two of her teammates - Rosa Fuentes in third and Jessi Mannis in fourth - finished among the top along with Como-Pickton junior Bethanie Stinson in second and Miller Grove's Stormy Combs in fifth.

Stinson, the only C-P runner in the race, came in at 12:49, followed 10 seconds later by Fuentes and then by Mannis in 13:12. Combs was fifth in 13:29.

NH senior Ebbonye Johnson also finished among the top 10, coming in 10th in 14:23. Scarlett Lozano was the fifth NH runner, placing 16th in 14:46. Virginia Thomas and Cayla Newkirk were both close behind, coming in under the 15-minute mark.

In the boys race, North Hopkins finished second to Class 3A Pleasant Grove, while Sulphur Bluff placed third.

Pedro Gonzalez finished fifth (17:28) and Jose Cadena eighth (17:48) for the Panthers, while Sulphur Bluff's Merced Rodriguez was the Bears' top finisher in 13th place (18:06).

North Hopkins won the JV boys race, led by Nick Tamsma in third place in 20:28. Como-Pickton's Ole Gutierrez and Justin Blount were fourth and fifth respectively.

In the JV girls division, Saltillo's Jessica Gilbreath won the race in 14:41, followed in second by Como-Pickton's Alma Lara (14:51), and North Hopkins' Brittany Whaley (15:44) and Hannah Martel (15:50).

The junior high boys race was won by North Hopkins' Brandon Joslin, while Como-Pickton's Lucy Lara was the individual winner in the junior high girls race.
