Lady Cats drop four-game match against Prairiland
From Staff Reports

Sept. 13, 2006 - PATTONVILLE - In their final match before the start of District 11-4A, the Sulphur Springs Lady Cats dropped a four-game outcome to Prairiland, but left head coach Christi Funk optimistic.

Prairiland won the match by scores of 25-15, 20-25, 25-23, 28-26. The final game, which was tied numerous times after an 11-11 knot, was what Coach Funk was most excited about.

"I'm very excited about district because we ended on a fighting note. That's our team's strength - we have fight. That's not something you can defend. It's not something anybody can take away from us or something anybody can put under attack," she explained. "We are fighters, and we will fight our way through district. I'm really excited about what that shows.

"It's not a skill, it's not our passing or back row, attacking or blocking. It's our fight, and that's very exciting."

The Lady Cats (8-14) will enjoy an open date on Friday before hosting Texas High on Tuesday in the 11-4A opener. Sulphur Springs finished third in the district last season, while Texas High was fourth.

The Lady Cats have their first three district matches at home, against Texas High, Paris and Mount Pleasant. Those are three teams which Prairiland has also played.

"We definitely gave them an outstanding fight. It was tied at 11-11 and it was a fight for each point the whole way," Funk said. "It was an outstanding game.

"The first game, we beat ourselves. After that, we could have taken every game on its own, but we just came up short."
