Hughes Springs shuts down Red Raiders

Sept. 9, 2006 - HUGHES SPRINGS - Down by only three points at the half, the Winnsboro Red Raiders could not find paydirt in the second half and lost to Hughes Springs 21-12 Friday night.

Winnsboro (1-1) took an early 6-0 lead as Tommy Evans scored from 75 yards out with 10:52 remaining in the first quarter.

Hughes Springs' Jabarri Wesley then tied the game at 6-6, powering his way in from a yard out. Jarrod McKinney converted the PAT with 3:48 remaining.

Winnsboro quarterback Jake Hawkins then plunged in from a yard out in the second quarter to score the Raiders' final points of the game before McKinney gave Hughes Springs the lead for good with a 4-yard run of his own. Todd Immel caught a Matt Stewart pass for the two-point conversion and a 15-12 lead at the half.

Hughes Springs' Walter Hopkins sealed the victory with a 57-yard scamper with 2:45 left for the 21-12 finale.
