Panthers snap 40 games losing streak with win over Trojans

Sept. 2, 2006 - ALBA - For the first time in 40 games, the Alba-Golden Panthers notched one in the win column with a 7-6 victory over the Cumby Trojans Friday night at Panther Stadium.

Panther (1-0) quarterback Austin Frye scored the game-winning touchdown in the third quarter on a quarterback keeper from a yard out. The PAT was good for a 7-6 lead.

Cumby (0-1) opened the scoring in the first quarter as freshman quarterback Brixx Hawthorne scored on a 56-yard touchdown scamper, but the Trojans went for two and were stopped.

The Cumby defense held Alba-Golden to only 37 yards of total offense in the first half and had two interceptions by Kris Stanford.

Hawthorne led the team in rushing with 11 carries for 116 yards and one touchdown and also was 5-of-10 for 104 yards passing in his varsity debut. 

Teammate Nathan Dunnihoo had 13 carries for 50 yards, Miles Parker had eight carries for 38 yards, and Adam Fite carried five times for eight yards.

Dunnihoo led the team in receiving with two catches for 42 yards, while tight end Josh Rodriguez had two catches for 35 yards, and Stanford had one reception for 27 yards.

Cumby will travel to Rockwall Christian next Friday night for a 7:30 p.m. start.
