Lady Cats advance to winners' bracket of Wills Point Tournament
From Staff Reports

Sept. 1, 2006 - WILLS POINT - The Sulphur Springs Lady Cats will play in the winners' bracket of the Wills Point tournament tomorrow after going 2-1 in pool play on Thursday.

The Lady Cats will play at 8 a.m. tomorrow against an unknown opponent. The top two teams from each pool advanced to the winners' bracket.

On Thursday, the Lady Cats beat the Wills Point JV in three games, lost to Commerce in two games and beat Corsicana in three, according to head coach Christi Funk. Statistics from the matches were not available.

Coach Funk said all the matches were well-played.

"The first game against Wills Point JV, we had some moments of breakdown but recovered nicely," she said. "Then we played Commerce. They beat us in two, but they were both very tough fights, very close games.

"We had some tough calls. The game point call ended up being the ref overruling a line judge."

In the final game, the Lady Cats defeated Corsicana, outlasting them in the third game despite having been at Wills Point all day, having played their matches at 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 7 p.m.

"Corsicana had a pretty good team and came out strong, but our girls are doing a really good job of executing," the coach said. "I have never seen more heart or fight than any group of 12 girls than I have ever been around. it doesn't matter what we're up against, they're going to fight hard all the way to the end.

"They proved that all day yesterday in really tough conditions - the gym didn't have any air conditioning and we were there all day, but they still won that final game."

Funk said she couldn't single out any girls for their individual play.

"Everybody played really well. Different people are doing a really good job of working on their weaknesses," she explained. "Everybody is making improvements."
