Oct. 28, 2006 - EMORY - The Rains Wildcats secured a return trip to the playoffs with a 27-3 homecoming win over the Quinlan Ford Panthers Friday night at a packed Wildcat Stadium. The win improves the Wildcats' record to 3-0 in District 10-3A, 7-1 overall. The loss drops Quinlan to 2-1 in district, 4-4 overall.

Rains opened the game with an 84-yard scoring drive that consumed seven minutes and 18 seconds off the clock. Mandel Christian gave the Cats the lead they never relinquished on a 4-yard touchdown run. Derek Hurst added the point-after kick for a 7-0 lead.

Quinlan followed with a 15-play drive of their own. The Panthers drove down to the Rains 12-yard line where they settled for a 19-yard field goal by Bryan Miller to make the score 7-3.

Rains was in no hurry to pad their lead in the second quarter. The Cats put together a 15-play scoring drive that ate up five minutes before Aaron Potts punched the ball into the end zone from 5-yards out to make the score 14-3 at the half.

Rains senior Ami Pitre was crowned homecoming queen during the halftime ceremony.

Josh Morales gave Quinlan a boost with a 63-yard run early in the opening moments of the second half. On the second play from scrimmage, he took the ball and raced around the left end and darted down the sideline toward the end zone. But Morales was brought down by free safety Taylor Marshall at the 10-yard line.

From there the Rains defense stiffened. Quinlan's attempt to cut the deficit with a 33-yard field goal failed.

Both defenses dominated most of the third quarter with Rains taking advantage of field position to set up a 20-yard touchdown run by Potts on the first play of the fourth quarter. The point-after attempt was blocked leaving a 20-3 score.

Colby Hoover capped the night's scoring with a 35-yard touchdown pass from Potts midway through the fourth quarter. Hurst added the point-after kick for the 27-3 final score.

Friday night the Wildcats will play host to the Nevada Community Braves.
