|Trojans hammer Fruitvale: Cumby's one win away from playoff berth|

Oct. 28, 2006 - CUMBY - The Cumby Trojans head into their match-up with state-ranked Wolfe City next Friday on a three-game winning streak after blasting the Fruitvale Bobcats 57-12 at Trojan Stadium Friday night.
The Trojans improved to 3-0 in District 17-A (4-4 overall), and are one win - or one loss by Quinlan Boles - away from claiming a playoff berth.
The Trojans had four touchdowns from senior Adam Fite on runs of 3, 1, 50 and 5 yards, and 120 yards rushing on 13 carries from Nathan Dunnihoo. Fite finished with eight carries for 97 yards.
Cumby scored on its first three possessions of the game as Fite opened up the scoring with a 3-yard run, and the two-point conversion was good by Dunnihoo for the 8-0 lead.�
Fruitvale came back and scored on its opening drive, but Cumby countered with a 26-yard run by freshman quarterback Brixx Hawthorne to give the Trojans a 14-6 lead.
The Trojans took a 22-6 lead on their third drive of the game and then fumbled the ball on their fourth possession as Fruitvale returned the fumble 65 yards for the 22-12 deficit.
In the second half, Cumby scored 35 unanswered points as Austin Newsom opened the half with a forced fumble that was recovered by Brian Clem, and then Hawthorne found Josh Rodriguez on a 36-yard touchdown pass.
Later in the quarter, Newsom forced his second fumble of the game - this time it was recovered by Michael Cross - and Dunnihoo converted the turnover into points on a 3-yards run. He then was on the receiving end of the two-point conversion for the 36-12 lead.
Cumby came up with the third turnover of the game as Rodney Hobbs intercepted a Fruitvale pass, and Fite subsequently broke free on a 50-yard run. Ryan Vaughn scored the two-point conversion.
After their fourth turnover of the game - a fumble recovered by Josh McCord - Fite scored from 5-yards out. Josh Rodriguez booted the PAT good.�
Cumby scored its final touchdown on the last series as Newsom scored on a 7-yard touchdown run. �
Hawthorne ended the game 11-of-17 passing for 143 yards and also ran eight times for 29 yards. Rodriguez was the team's leading receiver, grabbing five passes for 98 yards.
The Trojans generated 461 yards, while Fruitvale (0-8, 0-3) had 115.
