North Hopkins cross country wins district 20-A championship

Oct. 26, 2006 - ARKANSAS - The North Hopkins Lady Panthers continued their strong season with a first place finish during the District 20-A meet held at Camp Allen in Ravanna, Ark. on Wednesday.

North Hopkins placed all seven runners in the top 15 as Jessi Mannis won the individual title with a clocking of 11 minutes, 44 seconds on the two-mile course. Sabra Thomas came in third 11:55, Rosa Fuentes was fourth in 12:24, Ebbonye Johnson was fifth in a time of 12:48, and Scarlet Lozano rounded out the top 10 with a ninth-place finish in a time of 13:08.

Other North Hopkins runners were Cayla Newkirk in 13th place in 13:42 and Virginia Thomas was 14th in 13:46.

North Hopkins won the team championship with 22 points, while McLeod was second with 46 points.

The Lady Panthers will compete in the Class A, Region III meet at North Harris County College in Humble Nov. 4. The Class A race is scheduled for 11:40 a.m. and will feature the second and third place teams in the Cross Country Coaches Association of Texas rankings.

Lindsey goes into the regional race with a second-place ranking while North Hopkins is rated third.

In the junior varsity girls race, Brittany Whaley was the individual champion with a time of 13:47, Hannah Martel was fourth in 14:57, Tana Hall was 12th in 16:46, and Joy Johnson was 16th in 19:21.

The junior high boys won the district title for the third time with 28 points as Brandon Joslin was the individual champion with a clocking of 11:36, followed by Paco Castro in second at 11:47.

Other runners were: Cameron Wilks, seventh, 12:18; Jose Osorio, eighth, 12:19; Pablo Olquin, 10th, 12:34; Canyon Cockrum, 11th, 12:41; Luke Smith, 15th, 13:30; Zackery Teel, 20th, 13:45 and Dillon Williams, 37th, 16:15.
