Oct. 23, 2006 - CELESTE - The Cumby Trojans took a huge step toward nailing down a playoff berth on Friday when they pulled off a 36-28 upset of the Celeste Blue Devils.

With the win, the Trojans (3-4 overall) improved to 2-0 in District 17-A, tied atop the standings with state-ranked Wolfe City. The Trojans host Fruitvale (0-2, 0-7) next Friday.

Celeste fell to 1-1, 3-4 with the loss, but it didn't look like the Blue Devils would be on the losing end of their homecoming game when it started.

Celeste quarterback Casey Barbee threw two touchdown passes of 35 and 70 yards to stake the home team to a 14-0 lead.

Cumby, though, started its comeback as Adam Fite scored on a 14-yard run to cut the led to 14-6. Then, late in the first quarter, on a fourth-down play, quarterback Brixx Hawthorne scrambled and found a wide open Josh Rodriguez for a 17-yard touchdown catch. The pair also hooked up for the two-point conversion to knot the score at 14-14.

The second period was scoreless, thanks to a momentum-turning play by the Cumby defense. Celeste was at the 1-yard line when Cumby freshman Rodney Hobbs stripped Fritz Vale and senior Austin Newsom recovered the ball.

In the third quarter, Hawthorne set up the go-ahead touchdown with a 64-yard run up the sideline to give the Trojans a first-and-goal at the 5-yard line. Fite went the rest of the way and scored on a 5 yard run to give Cumby a 20-14 lead.

Celeste answered on Barbee's third touchdown pass of the night, a 14-yarder, giving the Celeste a 21-20 advantage.

In the final period, Adam Fite scored his third touchdown of the game on a 29-yard run. Hawthorne found Adam Fite on the conversion pass giving the Trojans a 28-21 lead. It wasn't long, though, before Barbee threw his fourth touchdown pass and the extra point tied the game with seven minutes left.

Cumby then drove down the field and scored with 40 seconds left when Hawthorne found Rodriguez on a 5-yard touchdown pass. The two-point conversion was good when Hawthorne connected with Kris Stanford in the back of the end zone to put Cumby ahead, 36-28.

With time running out, Celeste was unable to mount a last second drive.

Hawthorne ended the game 10-of-20 passing for 110 yards and also ran 11 times for 140 yards. Fite added 86 yards rushing. Rodriguez was the team's leading receiver, grabbing six passes for 85 yards.

The Trojans generated 360 total yards, while Celeste had 378.
