Area Basketball: Miller Grove girls, Saltillo girls and both Yantis teams win games

Nov. 21, 2006 - Miller Grove, Saltillo and Yantis girls picked up wins Monday in area basketball action, while on the boys side Yantis defeated Fruitvale and Miller Grove lost to Detroit.

GIRLS

Miller Grove 44, Detroit 35

Miller Grove improved to 2-3 on the year with a double-digit win over Detroit.

"The girls did a good job of playing together," said MGHS coach Gary Billingsley. "With each game the girls are understanding more and this is also a confidence booster."

Jamie Hayes led the way with a game-high 15 points, while Leslie Wagley added 13 points.

Detroit was led by Stevie Furra with 10 points.

Saltillo 60, North Hopkins 28

The Lady Lions got out to a 28-4 lead after the first quarter and held North Hopkins to single-digit scoring in three out of four quarters.

Saltillo had three players in double figures, led by Stephanie Methe with 16 points, Rebekah Rogers with 13 and Winter Stevens with 11.

North Hopkins was led by Sabra Thomas with a game-high 17 points.

YANTIS - The Yantis Lady Owls got 14 points from Amanda Collins and 10 from Jamie Snider in improving their record to 4-3.

The Lady Owls travel to Dodd City Tuesday.

Detroit 53, Miller Grove 52

The Hornets had 26 turnovers against Detroit to drop their record to 1-2.

"Detroit played a good game and you can't win if you turn the ball over that many times," said MGHS coach Gary Billingsley. "We had five of our eight ready to play tonight and the other three were not."

Cole Schoenky led the way with a double-double of 22 points and 14 rebounds for the Hornets while Reece Evans had 11 points and two rebounds.

Chaz Dickerson led Detroit with 14 points, while Tyler Jones and Shantize Savage each scored 12 points.

Miller Grove returns to the court at 7:15 p.m. today in Mineola.

YANTIS - The Yantis Owls overcame a stubborn Fruitvale team withan 18-7 fourth quarter run.

"Fruitvale is tough and plays good defense. We finally broke loose in the final quarter," Coach Larry Tucker said. "Jordan Davis had his best game as a varsity player. Zach Leatherwood and Cord Burnett gave us some great leadership. I am real proud of the effort."

Jordan Davis had a double-double with 21 points and 10 rebounds for Yantis.

The Owls move to 3-2 for the season and travel to Dodd City tonight.
