|Saltillo girls, Sulphur Bluff and Miller Grove pick up wins in area basketball|

Nov. 15, 2006 - After making a deep run in the playoffs last year, the Saltillo girls got off on the right foot Tuesday by routing Avery.
Sulphur Bluff picked off Cumby in a doubleheader, while Miller Grove split with ETCA and Yantis dropped two to Bland.
Most of those teams will be in action starting tomorrow in the Saltillo Invitational Tournament. Along with the host team, Hopkins County schools participating include North Hopkins, Sulphur Bluff, Como-Pickton, Yantis and Cumby.
Saltillo 69, Avery 35
SALTILLO - Junior Winter Stevens bucketed a game-high 27 points and four other girls scored at least eight points each as Saltillo rolled.
Stevens scored 17 points in the third quarter alone as the Lady Lions extended their 37-17 halftime lead to 56-23.
Rebekah Rogers added 13 points, Chloe Roberts contributed nine points and 13 assists, Stephanie Methe added eight points and eight rebounds, and Emily White contributed nine points.
Tasha McCarty had 13 points for Avery and Amanda Smith added 12.

SULPHUR BLUFF - Cumby's Scarlett Tarno recorded a triple-double on Tuesday, but Sulphur Bluff held the Lady Trojans to just one point in overtime to chalk up the win.
Tarno finished with 16 points, 15 rebounds and 10 steals, and teammate Lindsey Lemon added 10 points and seven steals. Courtney Stewart had 11 rebounds to go with five points and Meagan Comer had five rebounds and three points.
Sulphur bluff was paced by Helena Wall with nine points and Elizabeth McDonald with seven.

MILLER GROVE - The Lady Hornets outscored East Texas Christian Academy by one point in the second half, but couldn't overcome a 20-11 halftime deficit.
Mari Del Castillo led Miller Grove with 11 points and Jamie Hayes added 10. Leslie Wagley and Adrian Estrada scored six points each.
"We didn't come out ready to play," said MG head coach Gary Billingsley. "Our defensive intensity was not there, and they knocked down the open shots. Hopefully, by Friday we get back to the intensity we had in our first two games."
The Lady Hornets (1-2) play Commerce at 6 p.m. Friday.

YANTIS - Yantis (2-1) fell behind at the half 22-19 and could not get any closer as Bland outscored Yantis 13-4 in the third quarter to put the game out of reach.�
Jamie Snider led the Lady Owls with 19 points, Shelby Allen added six, Rachel Spurgeon and Jayna Bevill scored four each, Stephanie Hogg had two points and Amanda Collins scored one point.
The Lady Owls face Como-Pickton in the Saltillo Tournament at 4 p.m. Thursday.

SULPHUR BLUFF - Johnathan Andrews scored a team-high 14 points and was joined in double-figure scoring by two other Sulphur Bluff teammates in their season-opening win.
Merced Rodriguez added 11 points and Sam Woody 10 for the Bears.
Cumby was paced by Josh Rodriguez with 14 points and Kris Stanford with 10.

MILLER GROVE - Three Miller Grove players scored in double figures as the Hornets outscored East Texas Christian Academy in every quarter.
Freshman Seth Roberts led the Hornets (1-0) with 17 points, including a pair of 3-pointers, Yan Heijligers added 13 and Brady Harmon scored 12. Reece Evans contributed nine points.
"We played well defensively," said MG head coach Gary Billingsley. "The kids did a good job staying within our system."

YANTIS - The Yantis Owls fell in their season opener 44-34 in a low-scoring battle.�
Yantis took an early 6-0 lead but Bland fought back to lead 13-11 after one quarter and 27-17 at the half. The Owls fought back to cut the lead to 30-28, but went cold in the final eight minutes.
Cord Burnett led Yantis with 16 points, Jordan Davis and Justin Boren had five points each, Daniel Cerretani scored four and Tony Garcia and Zach Leatherwood added two points apiece.
"If we just make more of our shots and quit making mental mistakes we are going to be just fine," said Yantis coach Larry Tucker. "We played hard on defense and Justin Boren was really tough tonight."
Yantis faces Como-Pickton in the Saltillo tournament at 5:30 p.m. Thursday.
In the JV boys game Bland took a 32-21 win. Chase Phillips had eight points, Dalton Bruner added six points, Cory Thompson had four and Michael Hogg scored three.
