Grand Saline holds Eagles winless

Nov. 11, 2006 - GRAND SALINE - The Como-Pickton Eagles wrapped up the season Friday night with a 46-6 loss to the Grand Saline Indians at Indian Memorial Stadium.

The Eagles ended the season 0-10 and 0-5 in District 16-2A as they were outscored 406-93 this season. CPHS averaged 9.3 points per game this season on offense, while giving up 40.6 points per game on defense.

Grand Saline finished the season in fourth place in district at 2-3 and 3-6-1 overall.

On the opening play of the game, CPHS linebacker Reece Caddell picked up a 15-yard personal foul penalty and then the Indians made the Eagles pay on the next play.

Indians running back Matt Johnson rolled around the left side of the line and scampered 44 yards to pay dirt for the 7-0 lead with 11:51 remaining in the quarter. Kyle Thompson booted the PAT good. Johnson finished with eight carries for 96 yards and two touchdowns rushing.

Johnson came back on their next drive and scored from 26 yards out for the 13-0 lead.

Grand Saline extended its lead to 20-0 in the first quarter as Andrew Yarbrough powered his way for 10 yards and a touchdown with 6:21 remaining. Thompson nailed his second PAT good.

The Eagles' offense could not get anything going during the first half of the game and had one drive that stalled inside the Indians' 20-yard line as a pass from Austin Darby to Ryan Carpenter fell incomplete on fourth down.

Indians running back Bruce Strickland had a 1-yard touchdown to give them a 27-0 lead at the half.

In the third quarter, Johnson scored his third touchdown of the game - this time on a 65-yard punt return - and then Yarbrough scored on a 38-yard run as the Indians took a 40-0 lead into the final quarter.

The Eagles then put together their best drive of the game in the fourth quarter and capped it off with a 19-yard pass completion from Darby to Noe Tellez with 8:54 remaining. The Eagles went for two but James Carter was stopped in the back field. Carter finished with 64 yards rushing on 23 carries. Strickland then ended the scoring with a 4-yard run with 5:57 remaining in the contest.

Grand Saline generated 348 yards of offense - all rushing - compared to 152 yards for the Eagles.

Notes: Alex Williams led the team in rushing this year with 148 totes for 552 yard and two touchdowns. ... Darby led the way in the passing department going 24-of-66 for 318 yards and four touchdowns. He also had six interceptions. ... Alex Mowat was the leading receiver on the season with 13 catches for 181 yards and two touchdowns. ... The playoff teams for District 16-2A are Winnsboro, Quitman and Hawkins. ... CPHS punter Noe Tellez punted eight times in the game for an average of 25.2 yards. ... In the other district games, Hawkins defeated Alba-Golden 46-0 and Winnsboro took care of Quitman 40-6.
