Nov. 5, 2006 - EMORY - The Rains Wildcats set up a showdown for the District 10-3A title next week by winning their final home game Friday, shutting out the Nevada Community Braves 48-0 at Wildcat Stadium.
Mandel Christian gave the Wildcats the early spark. Christian scored two touchdowns on runs of 20 and 40 yards on his first three carries of the night. He finished the game with a team-high 146 and two touchdowns on seven carries.
Rains nursed its 14-point lead through most of the first half of play. The Rains offense got back on track when quarterback Aaron Potts connected with Colby Hoover for a 25-yard completion. Christian followed with a 35-yard run down to the Community 5. Derek Hurst capped the four-play drive with a 1-yard touchdown run that gave Rains a 20-0 lead with 1:17 remaining in the first half.
Rains had two additional scoring opportunities in the final seconds of the half. An interception by Kenneth Cawthon led to a 29-yard field goal by Derek Hurst which made the score 23-0. Seconds later, Potts picked off his first of two interceptions which was returned to the Community 19 by Montrea Hobbs with two seconds left before the intermission.
Potts completed an apparent touchdown pass to Montrel Christian on the final play of the half; however, an offensive penalty nullified the play leaving the 23-0 score at the half.
The second half was all Rains with the Wildcats scoring touchdowns on four of their five second-half possessions.
The win improves Rains' district record to 4-0, 8-1 overall. Friday night the Wildcats travel to Royse City for a showdown with the Royse City Bulldogs for the district title.
