March 14, 2006 - It may be spring break for the Sulphur Springs ISD, but the Lady Cat softball team can't afford to take a day off. At least not today.
The Lady Cats will open District 12-4A at 7 p.m. today when they host Paris in a match-up of two playoff squads from last season.
The Lady Cats finished as the district runner-up behind Texas High in 2005, and Paris closed out the season in third place.
In other district action tonight, pre-season favorite Texas High (6-2) travels to Greenville (4-7-1), while Mount Pleasant (12-6) takes on North Lamar (14-6).
Last year, Sulphur Springs swept Paris in their two district games, but it wasn't easy. The Lady Cats won 5-2 in Paris, and 2-1 in 10 innings at home.
The Lady Cats (5-5) have just four starters back from that team in catcher Nichole Fender, second baseman Amanda McGowin, shortstop Tara Gibby and center fielder Kristen McDonald.
SSHS first-year coach Tommy Grammer can choose from one of three pitchers to start tonight's game in junior Tarra Morton, sophomore Marci Womack or freshman Katie Dodd.
The Lady Cats have only played 10 games this year because one tournament was washed out and two other games canceled. After tonight's district contest, Sulphur Springs will play in its final tournament of the year hosted by Arlington High School, at the end of the week.
District play will resume next Tuesday when the Lady Cats host Mount Pleasant.
Tonight's action will start at 5 p.m. with the JV contest.
