March 13, 2006 - TEXARKANA - Tied up early in the second half, the Sulphur Springs Wildcats scored a pair of late goals Saturday to escape Leon Blake Stadium with a 4-2 soccer win over the Pleasant Grove Hawks.
Sulphur Springs led 2-1 at halftime behind first-half goals from Chris Rodgers, his team-leading 25th goal of the season, and Spenser Daniel, but Pleasant Grove tied the game just a couple of minutes into the second half.
The Wildcats were able to come away with the win when Rolando Larios put through the tie-breaking goal and Daniel knocked in the insurance score.
"We scored two goals early, and I think we kind of got complacent," said SSHS head coach Andy Holt. "But, we battled back and got the win."
Sulphur Springs (19-3 overall) improved to 10-0-0-1 in District 13-4A with a district-leading 31 points. With three games remaining, the Wildcats clinched a playoff berth. A win over Texas High on Tuesday at Gerald Prim Stadium during Senior Night, will move them one step closer to their second straight district championship.
Pleasant Grove, which received goals from Hayden Rybiski and Nias Dahler, is sitting in third place with a 7-4-0-0 record and 21 points, just one point ahead of Paris for the final playoff spot.
"We need to make sure we stay focused for 80 minutes," Holt said. "We played good in spots on Saturday, but we have to play the full 80 minutes."
