July 6, 2006 - Flag Football is coming back to Hopkins County.

The Shannon Oaks Church is bringing back the fast-paced game for boys and girls in kindergarten through sixth grade starting with the first practices on Aug. 14 and games beginning Sept. 9 at the church. The league is also looking for cheerleaders for the games.

"The registration has been going great and we just wanted to let everybody know what we were doing," said event coordinator Sean Reneau. "A lot of the same girls that did the Upwards basketball this year came back and are doing the football season as well," Reneau said.

Upwards flag football will follow the same principles as the Upwards basketball league, according to Reneau.

"The Upwards basketball program had been a success and we decided what a great opportunity to give Upwards flag football to the area," he said. "I think the greatest benefit we can hope for with the program will be to build a relationship with God for these kids."

Upwards flag football is a non-competitive league that has a devotional time during halftime. Coaches will also give a devotional at practices and the participants will receive awards for achievement during the games, and an awards celebration will be held Nov. 2 at the church.

Early registration is $60 for players and cheerleaders through this Saturday with an additional $10 charge until July 22.

Participants can also purchase football shorts at a cost of $13, while cheerleaders can purchase mock turtlenecks for $13.

Everyone must attend one flag football evaluation or cheerleading sign up and they will take place at the Shannon Oaks Church as follows:

Kindergarten through second grade boys/girls - Monday, July 17, 5:30-6:30 p.m.

Third through sixth grade boys/girls - Monday, July 17, 6:30 and 8:30 p.m.
