Jan. 28, 2006 - Five Sulphur Springs Wildcats can add another patch to their letter jackets.
The five were honored Friday with the release of the Texas Sports Writers Association All-State football squad.
Senior guard Torrence Wright was named First Team, senior tackle Jose Vargas was a Third Team selection, while senior wide receiver Josh Riley, junior quarterback Logan Turner and senior running back Chris Person were all named Honorable Mention.
The TSWA team takes into account statistics for all games played, including playoff contests.
It was the second All-State honor for most of the players.
Wright (6-2, 280) was a Second Team selection on the Associated Press Sports Editors All-State team released last month. The APSE team just takes into account regular season statistics and accomplishments.
Vargas (6-4, 330) was a First Team APSE selection and a Second Team pre-season Super Team pick. Meanwhile, Riley (5-10, 180) and Person (5-11, 205) were each Honorable Mention picks on APSE.
Wright, who will sign Wednesday to play football for Central Arkansas, had 93 pancake/knockdown blocks and allowed zero sacks.
Vargas, who will also sign Wednesday to back up his verbal commitment to Iowa State, had 113 pancake/knockdowns and no sacks allowed while grading out at more than 90 percent.
Riley, who was also a First Team All-State pick in baseball as a junior, had 95 catches for 980 yards and eight TDS. Turner completed 185-of-343 passes for 2,335 yards and 21 TDS, all of which are school records. He also rushed 127 times for 720 yards and nine touchdowns.
Person ran 209 times for 1,590 yards and 14 touchdowns and caught 20 passes for 207 yards and another score.
