Area Basketball: North Hopkins sweeps Cumby

Jan. 23, 2006 - North Hopkins swept a pair of varsity games from Cumby on Friday, while Yantis and Sulphur Bluff split their contests.

The Yantis boys got the win behind a rare quadruple-double from Jeremy Hurley.


Yantis 78, Sulphur Bluff 50

SULPHUR BLUFF - Yantis' Jeremy Hurley recorded a quadruple double - double figures in four different statistical categories - in leading Yantis to its first District 20-A win.

Hurley scored a game-high 18 points, pulled down 16 rebounds, came away with 10 steals and dished out 12 assists for the Owls (12-10, 1-4).

Jordan Davis added 15 points, six rebounds, four steals and four assists, while Cord Burnett added 14 points and six rebounds. T.J. Moreland contributed 10 points.

"Jeremy Hurley had a great game with a quadruple double, and our sophomores Cord Burnett and Jordan Davis really stepped up," said YHS head coach Harold Gilbreath.

Lance Smith led the Bears with 11 points, and Sam Woody scored 10. Sulphur Bluff hit five 3-pointers, while Yantis nailed seven.

North Hopkins 83, Cumby 54

BIRTHRIGHT - The North Hopkins Panthers outscored Cumby, 54-29, in the second half on Friday to stay atop the District 19-A, Div. I standings.

Steven Crocker scored 23 points, Cory Johnson bucketed 18 and Dustin Clements added 16 for the Panthers (18-7 overall, 4-0 in district).

Roger Sancho scored nine and Spencer McQueen contributed seven.

Kris Stanford scored 24 and Jake Petty added 17 for Cumby, which took a 14-8 lead after the first quarter.

"We overcame a slow first quarter where we weren't too focused," said NH head coach Steve Drummond.

SULPHUR BLUFF - The Yantis JV stayed unbeaten in district (4-0, 15-1 overall) behind 27 points from Daniel Cerretani and 10 from Zach Leatherwood.

C. Nichols scored nine to lead Sulphur Bluff.

SULPHUR BLUFF - Summer Stailey scored a game-high 27 points and Kaylee Phillips added 11 for Sulphur Bluff as the Lady Bears improved their district record to 2-3.

Tara Williams and Jennifer McDonald scored nine points each for Sulphur Bluff.

Sulphur Bluff is in fourth place in District 20-A, Div. II, one game ahead of Yantis (13-10 overall).

The Lady Owls were led in scoring by Jamie Snider with 19 points, five steals and three assists, while Jayna Bevill added nine points, five rebounds, five steals and five assists, and Jamie Gilliland bucketed eight points to go with seven rebounds. Stacy Ponder had a team-high eight rebounds along with six points.

BIRTHRIGHT - North Hopkins' Hannah Martel scored a game-high 20 points and teammate Megan Lehr pitched in eight points during their win over Cumby.

The Lady Trojans were led in scoring by Ariel Green with 10 points.
