Area Basketball: Saltillo girls defeat Avinger; North Hopkins remains in first with win over Cumby

1, 2006 - The Saltillo girls picked up a huge district win on Friday, beating Avinger to put them in a first-place tie in District 20-A.

North Hopkins girls remained in first place in their district with an easy win over Cumby.


Saltillo 38, Avinger 24

AVINGER - Chloe Roberts and Winter Stevens each scored 12 points for Saltillo as the Lady Lions moved into a tie for first in District 20-A, Div. II.

Saltillo is at 4-1 in the district, tied with Avinger and Karnack.

Avinger was led in scoring by Dominike Moody with nine points.

Saltillo overcamea  6-5 first-quarter deficit to go ahead, 18-10, at the intermission as Avinger scored under 10 points in every quarter.

Avinger - Dominike Moody 9, Lauren Starret 8, Whitney Samples 1, Merri-Jo Laird 4, Carrie Marshburn 2. 

North Hopkins 62, Cumby 20

BIRTHRIGHT - North Hopkins senior post Katy Williams had a double-double with 24 points and 11 rebounds to go along with three steals and one assists, while teammate Jessi Mannis scored 12 points to go along with five assists and four rebounds Friday night.

Ebbonye Johnson had a double-double with 10 points and 10 steals to go with five assists and four rebounds for the Lady Panthers (16-9, 4-0 in District 19-A, Div. I).

Cumby (9-10, 0-3) was led in scoring by Karen Lacey with seven points.

Avinger 89, Saltillo 65

AVINGER - Avinger received a team-high 33 points from Tyrus Dowell while teammate Jeremy Loyd pitched in 15 points Friday night in their win over Saltillo.

Avinger (4-1 in District 20-A, Div. II), the No. 12 ranked team in Class A, Div. II, held a 46-30 at the half and a 74-48 lead after three quarters.

Micah Payne scored 33 points for Saltillo (3-2, in third place) and Chris Tully pitched in 14 points in the loss. Derek McClure added nine and Jocsan Gamez eight points.
