Area Basketball: Cumby girls defeat Wolfe City

Jan. 16, 2006 - The Cumby girls notched a non-district win over Wolfe City on Friday, while Miller Grove was also involved in non-conference play against Avinger.

Como-Pickton faced Edgewood in 17-2A action, but lost both varsity contests.

WOLFE CITY - Cumby's Scarlett Tarno had a double-double with 13 points and 15 rebounds to go along with six steals and one assist in a 28-18 non-district win over Wolfe City Friday night.

"I thought the kids player well considering we were missing some kids because they were at a Beta convention," said first-year Cumby coach Renee' Morris.

Cumby (9-10 overall, 0-4 in district play) are at North Hopkins Friday night.

AVINGER - Leslie Wagley scored 24 points for Miller Grove, but it was not enough to overcome Avinger's balanced scoring attack.

Wagley hit three 3-pointers en route to her total and teammate Adrian Estrada hit a 3-pointer as part of her 13 points.

Dominike Moody scored 12 points and Whitney Samples 10 for the Lady Indians (12-8).

EDGEWOOD - Como-Pickton freshman Maci Kight bucketed 15 points, but Edgewood's first-half defense was too much for the Lady Eagles to overcome.

C-P scored nine points in the first half as Edgewood took a 25-9 halftime advantage in the District 17-2A contest.

AVINGER - Tyrus Dowell, Avinger's All-State senior, hit for 41 points as Avinger beat the Hornets in non-district play.

Dowell also grabbed 10 rebounds and had five steals as the Indians improved to 16-2.

Miller Grove had four players score in double figures, led by Lucas Kerby with 20 points. Oscar Delcastillo added 14, while Cole Schoenky and Yan Heijligers added 10 each.

EDGEWOOD - No Edgewood player scored in double figures, but the Bulldogs' balanced scoring was enough for the District 17-2A win.

LaKeith Henson and Brett Perry both scored nine for Edgewood and five other players bucketed at least six points each.

Como-Pickton's Bo Baxter led all scorers with 14 points, while Clayton Humphrey added eight.
