Area Basketball: Miller Grove and Yantis girls notch first district wins

Jan. 9, 2006 - Miller Grove and Yantis girls both notched their first district victories on Friday, while Karnack swept a pair of games from Saltillo.

In non-district action, the North Hopkins girls defeated Class 2A Grand Saline.


Girls

Miller Grove 60, Fannindel 44

LADONIA - Jaime Hayes and Mari Delcastillo each registered double-doubles on Friday to lead the Miller Grove Lady Hornets to their first district win.

Hayes had a team-high 22 points and 11 assists to go with eight steals and five rebounds. Delcastillo added 10 points, 10 rebounds, four steals and three blocked shots.

Adrian Estrada registered 15 points, six boards and six steals, and Rebecca George contributed eight points and 10 rebounds for the Lady Hornets (1-1 in District 19-A, Div. II).

"The girls did a great job of pushing the ball tonight," said MG head coach Sara Garmon. "They read the passing lanes well and got a lot of steals.  They played team ball tonight, and that's what I've been wanting them to show me this season.

Miller Grove travels to Dodd City on Tuesday for another district contest.

Avinger 44, Sulphur Bluff 26

SULPHUR BLUFF - The Lady Bears got off to a slow start and couldn't recover against Avinger, which improved to 2-0 in District 20-A, Div. II.

Sulphur Bluff went scoreless in the first quarter, falling behind by 11-0. The Lady Bears trailed 22-8 at halftime and 33-14 after three periods.

Emily McDonald led the Lady Bears (1-1 in district) with 10 points, while Veronica Gutierrez added six.

Lauren Starrett paced the Lady Indians (10-8) with 13 points, Whitney Samples added 11 and Dominique Moody 10.

Yantis 37, Bloomburg 27

BLOOMBURG - Yantis used a strong second-half performance to beat Bloomburg in District 20-A, Div. II action.

The Lady Owls (1-1 district) were down, 20-17, at halftime, but held Bloomburg to just seven points over the final half.

Sarah Collins led Yantis with 11 points, while Amanda Collins added eight. 

Kaitlyn Cornelius led Bloomburg (0-2 district) with nine points.

GRAND SALINE - Senior post Katy Williams scored 30 points and grabbed 15 rebounds to lead the Lady Panthers to a victory in their final non-district contest. Williams also had four steals.

Junior guard Ebbonye Johnson added 10 points and four rebounds, and Nancy Castro contributed nine points and three steals. Sophomore Jessi Mannis led the team in assists with four to go with three steals.

North Hopkins - Katy Williams 30, Sabra Thomas 4, Elizabeth McPherson 2, Nancy Castro 9, Ebbonye Johnson 10.


Fruitvale 52, Cumby 26

CUMBY - Cumby dropped to 8-9 overall and 0-2 in district play with a double-digit loss to Fruitvale Friday night.

"We couldn't do anything offensively or defensively," said first-year coach Renee' Morris.

Karen Lacey led Cumby with seven points, four rebounds, one steal and one assist, Mary Ugalde and Scarlett Tarno had six points each. Tarno was the leading rebounder with eight.

Fruitvale was led by Hodges with 25 points.

The Lady Trojans are at Campbell Tuesday night.

KARNACK - Chloe Roberts scored 19 points and Winter Stevens added 14 for Saltillo, but the Lady Lions dropped to 1-1 in District 20-A, Div. II with the loss.

Jessica Gilbreath and Emily White added eight points each for the Lady Lions.

Karnack leads the district with a 2-0 record.

Boys

Bloomburg 60, Yantis 53

BLOOMBURG - A cold third quarter was the undoing of the Owls, as they were outscored, 17-4, in the period and dropped to 0-2 in District 20-A, Div. II.

Yantis held a 27-26 lead at halftime, but couldn't overcome the scoring difference in the third period

Jeremy Hurley and T.J. Moreland had 12 points apiece for Yantis. Hurley, Jonathan Cook and Cord Burnett each hit a pair of 3-pointers for the Owls.

Heath Dunlap pumped in 21 points and snared 12 rebounds for Bloomburg.  The Wildcats (2-0) made eight 3-pointers, with Dunlap hitting three.

Karnack 67, Saltillo 48

KARNACK - Miles Payne scored 28 points for Saltillo, but the Lions couldn't upset the No. 5-ranked team in Class A, Div. II.

Payne also recorded six rebounds and five steals. Derek McClure added nine points, Cody Tully had eight, and Jocsan Gamez contributed a team-high nine rebounds.

Karnack (2-0) is tied for the District 20-A, Div. II lead with Bloomburg, while Saltillo is 1-1.

In the JV game, Karnack edged Saltillo, 35-31.
