Area Basketball: Saltillo sweeps Yantis; North Hopkins sweeps Detroit

Jan. 4, 2006 - Saltillo took a pair of games from Yantis in their district openers on Tuesday, while the Cumby girls and Miller Grove boys both fell in their first district games, and North Hopkins swept Detroit in non-district action.


Boles 52, Cumby 39

CUMBY - Boles' Sandra Duran scored a game-high 23 points to lead her team to the opening-game victory in District 19-A, Div. 1.

Cumby was paced by Mary Ugalde, who scored 17 points, including a pair of 3-pointers, to go with two rebounds, three steals and two assists, and a team-high 12 rebounds and three steals from Scarlett Tarno. Karen Lacey added nine points.

"The kids played hard," said Cumby head coach Renee Morris. "Duran is a very good player. She does it all."

The Lady Trojans (8-8 overall, 0-1 in district), will host Fruitvale on Friday.

Cumby - Mary Ugalde 17, Karen Lacey 9, Scarlett Tarno 5, Courtney Steward 4, Lindsey Lemon 2, Amber Hammons 2.

North Hopkins 57, Detroit 8

DETROIT - The Lady Panthers limited Detroit to a single bucket in the first half and held the Lady Eagles to just 10 percent shooting from the field.

Sabra Thomas and Katy Williams both posted double-doubles for North Hopkins (11-9). Thomas finished with 10 points and a game-high 15 rebounds, while Williams had 21 points, 11 boards and four assists. 

Jessi Mannis added 11 points and a team-high six assists and five steals, and Cayla Newkirk recorded four steals and three assists.

North Hopkins took a 31-2 lead at halftime, and Detroit finished shooting 4-of-39 from the field.

SALTILLO - Saltillo got 48 combined points from junior Chloe Roberts and sophomore Winter Stevens in their district-opening victory.

Roberts had 27 points and Stevens 21 as Saltillo improved to 14-5 overall, 1-0 in District 20-A, Div. II.


Roxton 61, Miller Grove 50

MILLER GROVE - Roxton got off to an 8-0 start to open the game, and Miller Grove couldn't close the gap in the District 19-A, Div. II opener.

Oscar Delcastillo and Cole Schoenky each scored 14 points to lead the Hornets, and Lucas Kerby added 11.

Roxton was paced by Duran with 16 and Green with 15.

Roxton took a 17-8 lead after one period and held a 29-21 halftime advantage.

"We did not come out and match their intensity," said MG head coach Gary Billingsley. "The kids did a good job of not quitting, and played hard. We just have to have a better start.

The Hornets (12-7 overall, 0-1 in district) plays at Fannindel on Friday.

North Hopkins 81, Detroit 57

DETROIT - North Hopkins put up 47 points in the second half on Tuesday, breaking open a seven-point halftime game.

Jake Cockrum led the Panthers with 24 points and five assists,while Steven Crocker posted a double-double of 17 points and 10 rebounds to go with two blocks. Cory Johnson added 14 points and seven boards, and Dustin Clements bucketed 10 points and dished out five assists.

"Our offensive execution in the second half was the best it had been all year," said NH head coach Steve Drummond. "All our kids can score, so it was tough on Detroit."

The Panthers (14-6) play their seventh consecutive road game Friday at Grand Saline.

The North Hopkins JV won, 39-27.

SALTILLO - Derek McClure scored 19 points and Cody Tully added 14 for Saltillo as the Lions improved to 12-7 overall, 1-0 in District 20-A, Div. II.

In the JV game, Yantis prevailed, 44-21.
