Edgewood High School rejoins Como-Pickton in all sports except football
Feb. 24, 2006 - COMO - Edgewood High School is back in District 16-2A in all activities except football following an appeal to the District Assignment Appeals Committee of the UIL Monday morning.
Edgewood moves from District 12-2A to 16-2A, which includes Alba-Golden, Como-Pickton, Grand Saline, Hawkins, Quitman and Winnsboro to form a seven-team district in basketball and all other activities except football.
"Right now, I am not positive that they are back in all sports except football. What I am sure of is that Edgewood is back in our district for basketball and they are not in for football," said Como-Pickton athletic director and head football coach Joe Ryzman.
"It was an open-ended letter from the UIL and we don't have a clear understanding of whether or not they are in our district for the remainder of the spring sports and all others."
The appeal was in regard to travel purposes only and was the only one of 10 appeals granted by the 13-member committee of UIL Legislative Council members.
Edgewood was placed in a district with Caddo Mills, Dallas Life Oak Cliff, Lone Oak, Palmer and Scurry-Rosser for all sports, plus Dallas Faith Family and Irving North Hills for basketball.
"My opinion on what I know to be factual is that I am fine with that and their argument to the University Interscholastic League was that they did not want to drive that far to their district games and if that is a legitimate reason to try and get back in," the coach said.
Ryzman said the move into the district will not affect things in terms of scheduling for the next two years.
"It will not concern basketball as much as it would football because my main concern was scheduling. If they had been granted their appeal in football, it would have changed the scheduling in all of our district because we had to add another non-district game," he said. "I am glad that they were not able to come into our district strictly because of the scheduling and the UIL made the right decision."
The Assignment Appeals Committee voted to deny appeals from the following schools and districts: Wylie, Keller Fossil Ridge, Del Rio, District 21-2A, Charlotte, Chester, Leonard, Dayton and Fruitvale.
