Sulphur Springs powerlifting team qualifies four for regional meet
Feb. 23, 2006 - SSHS senior Zach Lewis won another powerlifting meet and is one of four Wildcats who are currently qualified for the regional meet in two weeks.
Lewis, Eric Gunderson, Jeffery Pitts and James Taylor are all in the top 10 in their respective weight classes and will receive an automatic invitation to the regional meet on March 4 in Greenville. Jacob Jenkins is currently 11th and would go to the regional meet as an alternate.
Following Saturday's meet in Greenville, Lewis remained the top lifter in the 132-pound weight class. He won the meet with a total of 1,050 pounds, which is 10 pounds less than his season best.
He leads the second-place qualifier by 35 pounds in their three combined lifts: squat, dead lift and bench press.
Gunderson, who has the second-best total, in the 114-pound weight class with an 820-pound total, competed Saturday in the 123-pound division and lifted 840 pounds, which puts him in third in that weight class.
Taylor and Jenkins both increased their totals by large amounts to move into regional-qualifying status in the 242-pound weight division. Taylor totaled 1,265, which was an increase of 35 pounds over his previous best. Jenkins lifted 1,255 pounds, which was a 60-pound increase over his previous high.
Pitts, a junior, did not lift on Saturday, but still sits in fourth place in the 148-pound weight class with a 1,025-pound total.
