SSHS tennis team fairs well at Longview tournament
Feb. 20, 2006 - LONGVIEW - The SSHS tennis team made a strong showing at the Longview Lobo Tournament on Friday by not only taking one of the top three places in boys doubles, boys single and girls singles, but also being awarded the Sportsmanship Trophy.
The Wildcat netters battled extreme cold and freezing rain in their first tournament action of the season.
"I was very impressed with the way the kids stepped up and give it their best effort," said SSHS head coach Susan Reynolds. I was most proud of winning the Sportsmanship Trophy.
"No matter how cold or tired the kids were, they supported each other. They are a class act on and off the court, and to get a trophy for that is a true honor."
On the courts, the doubles team of Erich Hartin and Jacob Harris won the consolation bracket in boys "A" doubles, while Kyle Williams and Cameron Mitchell were third in boys "B" doubles. Jordan Horne placed third in boys "B" singles, and Crystal Figueroa took the girls "B" singles consolation title.
The team is starting to jell after injuries and illness have taken away three of their top players this semester.
"The boys doubles are coming together, and to take third and the consolation championship is a great step for these guys," Reynolds said. 'I was also very pleased with the play of Jordan Horne and Crystal Figueroa. Crystal was thrown into the No. 2 spot in singles after Tara's (Moore) injury, and she really played some great tennis."
Sulphur Springs faced competition from John Tyler, Robert E. Lee, Longview, Texas High, Rockwall, Kilgore, Spring Hill, Athens, Jacksonville, Marshall and Center.
Hartin and Harris beat Ross/Hanna from Jacksonville in a very tight consolation championship, 7-6 (12-10), 6-7 (9-11), 10-8. Williams and Mitchell took third place in their bracket by beating Longview's Kuo/Hohlt, 6-3, 1-6, 10-7.
Horne won his first two matches, lost in the semifinals, then beat Longview's Austin Cole, 6-2, 6-2, for third place. Figueroa meanwhile, defeated Brittany Sowell of Center, 8-4, in the consolation finals.
All of the SSHS players won at least one match in the tourney.
They will next play tomorrow afternoon at Van.
