|Lady Cats lose, 3-0, to Rockwall Heath|
|From Staff Reports|
Feb. 8, 2006 - The Sulphur Springs Lady Cats gave up three first-half goals to Rockwall Heath on Tuesday, and couldn't rebound from the deficit in a 3-0 loss at Gerald Prim Stadium.
It was the final non-district soccer match for the Lady Cats (5-7-3), who open District 13-4A on Friday at North Lamar.
SSHS head coach J.J. Williams expects the Lady Cats to perform better despite having several starters out of action the last few weeks.
"We've got some key starters out, and we need to get everyone healthy," Williams said. "But, more than that, we need to pull together with the ones we have out there. We can't sit back and wait - we've got to play better no matter who is on the field.
"We played sloppy in the first half, and though we played better in the second half, we couldn't do enough to overcome those three goals."
He said freshman Shelbi Elkins was inserted in goal midway through the first half and she responded with a second-half shutout.
"That was her first varsity action, and I thought she played very well," Williams said.
He also praised the play of forwards Gayle Grand-Lienard and freshman Bonnie Grafton, who saw her first action in two weeks because of a concussion.
The Lady Cats need as many healthy as possible when they face North Lamar, one of the district favorites, on Friday.
The team will work on ball-handling skills heading into the match, Williams said.
"We need to work on spreading out, working the ball and making good passes," he explained. "We need to possess the ball and control it rather than kicking it to a different color jersey."
The JV match will start at 5:30 p.m., with the varsity to follow at 7 p.m.
