Area Basketball: Panthers lose first district game of year

Feb. 4, 2006 - The North Hopkins Panthers lost their first district game of the season, while Yantis won their Senior Night contest against Sulphur Bluff Friday night. 

On the girls side, Sulphur Bluff spoiled the Yantis girls' Senior Night with a win of the Lady Owls, who fall to 1-8 in district play.


Boys

Yantis 76, Sulphur Bluff 59

YANTIS - The Yantis Owls jumped out to a 38-19 lead at the half and cruised to a win over Sulphur Bluff.

"It was a great win for our seniors," said Yantis coach Harold Gilbreath. "We are going to Avinger Tuesday looking for another win."

Jeremy Hurley finished with a double-double of 18 points and 15 rebounds, while T.J. Moreland had 14 points and nine rebounds for Yantis, which is now 15-12 overall and 3-6 in District 20-A, Div. II.

Sulphur Bluff (0-22, 0-9) received 19 points from M. Rodriguez.

Boles 55, North Hopkins 49

BIRTHRIGHT - The North Hopkins Panthers dropped their first District 19-A, Div. I game of the season to the Quinlan Boles Hornets.

"We had nothing to play for and did not bring much intensity, and Boles shot well," said NHHS coach Steve Drummond. "It was disappointing for our seniors and now we have to refocus for the playoffs."

North Hopkins (20-8, 6-1) received 15 points from J.P. Whittle and Steven Crocker pitched in 12 points.

Boles (3-3 in district) received 18 points from Chris Arnwine and 14 points from Daniel Sanchez.

Nichols led the Sulphur Bluff junior varsity with 11 points in their win over Yantis.

Yantis (18-3, 7-0 in district) received 18 points from Jesus Olayo and 16 points from Terry Thompson.

YANTIS - The Yantis Lady Owls dropped to 13-14 on the year and 1-8 in district with a loss to Sulphur Bluff on Senior Night.

"My three senior posts combined for eight points and 14 rebounds, and my senior guard always provides a defensive spark off the bench," said Yantis coach Randy Phillips.

Yantis was led by Jamie Gilliland with 11 points and seven rebounds, while seniors Starla Burchfield (four points, two rebounds), Stacy Ponder (two points and eight rebounds) and Christina Bean (two points and five rebounds) played in their final home game.

Sulphur Bluff received 19 points from Jennifer McDonald and Summer Stailey scored 14 points.
