Wildcats tennis bounces back with shutout of Mount Pleasant
From Staff Reports

Feb. 3, 2006 - MOUNT PLEASANT - The Sulphur Springs Wildcats picked up their first win of the tennis season by shutting out Mount Pleasant, 9-0, on Thursday at the Tigers' courts.

"This was a great win for us mentally," said SSHS head coach Susan Reynolds. "We had three three-setters that were very close, but the kids stepped up when they needed to."

The boys doubles team of Cameron Mitchell and Kyle Williams was victorious in three sets, while Cynthia Sanchez went three sets and the girls doubles team of Aly Jackson and Lauren Longino was victorious in three as well.

On the boys side, Ryan Thompson and Jordan Horne were victorious, and the boys doubles team of Jacob Harris and Erich Hartin won in straight sets.

In girls action, Crystal Figueroa won her singles match in straight sets, and the girls doubles team of Morgan McCormack and Katie Hettich won in straight sets. The mixed doubles team of Landon McCaig and Trish Byron was also victorious for SSHS.

The tennis team lost Tara Moore, one of its top singles players, for the  season with an abdominal hernia injury that will require surgery during spring break, according to Reynolds.

The squad was already playing short-handed due to Brant Small's knee surgery and Kendall Smith's undergoing treatment for Hodgkins Disease.

"I had to shuffle around the lineup, but with all the adversity our kids have stayed focused and keep improving every week," the coach said. "I was impressed with our singles matches."

The Wildcats tennis team will travel to Mansfield Timberview Feb. 11 in their next varsity action.

"Mansfield will be a stronger test for us and will be the beginning of a tough road schedule for us," Reynolds said.
