Area Basketball: NH boys wrap up title, Saltillo girls still in the running

Feb. 1, 2006 - The Karnack Indians and the North Hopkins Panthers solidified their district titles Tuesday night in area basketball action as both teams stayed undefeated in district play.

In girls action, the North Hopkins Lady Panthers had a 33-game district winning streak snapped by Campbell, while Miller Grove and Cumby lost in their respective games.


Karnack 65, Yantis 38

KARNACK - The No. 4-ranked Karnack Indians clinched the District 20A, Div. II championship with a double-digit win over Yantis.

Karnack (17-6, 8-0) was led in scoring by Damian Jones with 15 points, Malcolm Thomas scored 14 points and Ontarius Dudley pitched in 12 points.

Jeremy Hurley had a double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds for the Owls. 

Yantis is now 14-12 overall and 2-6 in district play and will host Sulphur Bluff Friday night.

CAMPBELL - The North Hopkins Panthers clinched the District 19-A, Div. I championship with a win over Campbell.

"I'm very proud of our team to clinch the district championship this early," said NH coach Steve Drummond. "We want to try to close it out perfect."

North Hopkins (20-7, 6-0) received a double-double from J.P. Whittle with 24 points and 12 rebounds, while teammate Steven Crocker pitched in 20 points.

Justin Birden led Campbell with 24 points.

MILLER GROVE - Lucas Kerby and Cole Schoenky each recorded double-doubles for the Hornets (17-10, 5-3 in district) in their win Tuesday night.

Kerby finished with 12 points and 12 rebounds, while Schoenky finished with 15 points and 10 rebounds.

Dodd City was led by Sadler with 15 points.

"The kids played well," said first-year coach Gary Billingsley. "They tried to hold the ball and we did a good job of making them play our game."

KARNACK - Yantis improved to 17-1 overall and 6-0 in district play with a big win over Karnack. 

Jordan Thompson had a double-double with 12 points, 16 rebounds and six blocks with Daniel Cerretani had 17 points and Jesus Olayo had 11 points for the Owls.

Boles 61, Cumby 36

QUINLAN - The Cumby Lady Trojans fell behind 33-17 at the half and could not recover against the Quinlan Boles Lady Hornets in District 19-A action.

Mary Ugalde led Cumby with 17 points, while classmate Karen Lacey scored eight points and pulled down nine rebounds.

Boles was led by Benton with 21 points.

Cumby hosts North Hopkins next Tuesday night for Parent Night and the seniors will be recognized after the girls game.

CAMPBELL -  A 33-game district winning streak over the past four seasons was snapped Tuesday night and now has North Hopkins and Campbell tied for the district lead.

Katy Williams led North Hopkins with a double-double of 20 points and 18 rebounds,, while teammate Ebbonye Johnson had nine points and four rebounds in the loss.

Barker led Campbell with 18 points and eight rebounds.

North Hopkins shot 15-of-77 for 19.5 percent in the game compared to 20-of-52 for 38.5 percent.

MILLER GROVE - Leslie Wagley had 29 points and three rebounds for the Lady Hornets in their loss Tuesday night.

"Leslie had a really good game and shot real well for us," said MGHS coach Sara Garmon.

Darwin led Dodd City with 18 points.

Caddo Mills 41, Como-Pickton 33

CADDO MILLS - Tied at 33-33 with three minutes to play, the Caddo Mills Lady Foxes outscored Como-Pickton 8-0 to take the win.

"The girls played well overall," said first-year coach Devin Gabbard. "They dug their way back into the game after being down by nine points."

The Lady Eagles were led by freshman Maci Kight with 15 points, eight boards and two steals, while teammate Rebecca Humphrey had nine points, four rebounds and two steals.

Caddo Mills had 23 points from Wade.
