Lady Cats win Consolation title at Commerce
From Staff Reports

Dec. 11, 2006 - COMMERCE - The Sulphur Springs Lady Cats finished off the Commerce Winter Classic on Saturday winning their fourth game of the tournament and coming home with a consolation trophy.

The Lady Cats won 4-of-5 games in the tournament, including the consolation final against Commerce, 47-30.

SSHS junior post Starkeisha Wright scored 14 points and grabbed six rebounds to sew up an All-Tournament selection. Wright averaged 14.8 points and 9.3 rebounds per game in the tourney.

"She played really well the entire tournament. Her game against Bonham was the best I have seen her play," SSHS head coach Tina Carrillo said about her 27-point, 12-rebound effort on Friday.

Against Commerce, Sulphur Springs held the Lady Tigers to single-digit scoring in three periods. Sulphur Springs (11-3) took a 17-2 lead after one period and led 27-14 at halftime.

"I'm happy that we received a trophy again since this is the second tournament we've done that in," Carrillo said. "If we have a big lead coming out of halftime, we tend to have more lulls and lose our focus. Those are the type of problems we need to fix."

Senior Emily Bouyear and sophomore Mackenzie Cross each scored eight points, with Cross recording five steals and three assists and Bouyear coming up with three steals. Senior forward Cresha Hubbard added six points and a team-high eight rebounds.

Commerce was led by freshman guard Danielle Essix who scored 17 points.

In the tournament, the Lady Cats held their opponents to 36.6 points per game, but averaged just 45 points themselves.

"We still struggle in our shooting some. We're up and down, and that's the part I want to even out," Carrillo said. "If we can do that and be more consistent in our shooting, we'll be competitive every single day.

"If we can continue to work on our shooting in practice, we'll be ready when we start district."

The Lady Cats will have a short turnaround as they host Quitman today. Quitman's freshmen team is playing another game, so the SSHS freshmen and JV will combine to play Quitman's JV at 4:30 p.m., with the varsity game to follow.

Quitman is coming off a championship in North Hopkins' Freeman Parish Tournament, beating Mount Pleasant Chapel Hill 63-46 in the final game on Saturday.
