Sulphur Springs tennis team in contention for region tournament
From Staff Reports

April 12, 2006 - MOUNT PLEASANT - Sulphur Springs moved to the second and final day of the District 12-4A tennis tournament with seven individuals or doubles teams still in contention for a regional berth.

"The kids are really playing well," said SSHS head coach Susan Reynolds. "We've got several who are in good position to go to regional."

Cynthia Sanchez, the SSHS No. 1 girls player, will be playing for the district title today against a Mount Pleasant girl. Sanchez beat the No. 1 player from Texas High on Tuesday.

In girls doubles, the team of Aly Jackson and Lauren Longino are also playing for the 12-4A championship against a Texas High squad.

The top two in each bracket advance to the Class 4A, Region II tournament. However, in the case where second place has not played third place, there is a playback where those two meet to determine the regional qualifier.

If Sanchez or the Jackson/Longino duo win either of their possible two matches today, they will advance.

The other SSHS girls doubles team of Morgan McCormack and Katie Hettich are playing against Mount Pleasant for third place. If they win, they could be in position for a possible playback.

In mixed doubles, two SSHS teams are playing for third place and a possible playback. Kyle Williams and Jessica Henry will be facing Landon McCaig and Crystal Figueroa today.

In boys doubles, two SSHS teams are also facing each other for third place and a possible playback. Brant Small and Jacob Harris are playing Erich Hartin and Jordan Horne for third.

Today's matches were scheduled to start at 8:30 a.m. at the MPHS tennis courts.
