Sept. 28, 2005 - YANTIS - After a five-game loss to the North Hopkins Lady Panthers one week ago, the Cumby Lady Trojans were looking for their first district win against Yantis, but were defeated in four games.

The Lady Owls won by scores of 25-13, 23-25, 25-19, 25-11 to improve to 10-7 overall and 2-0 in District 19-A.

"The girl's played very, very well and I was extremely proud of them," said Yantis coach Bill Magness. "They slacked off a little bit in the second game, but they came back and scored the points when they were really needed."

Coach Renee' Morris' Lady Trojans are now 11-11 on the season and 0-2 in district with a matchup against Fruitvale on Saturday in Cumby.

Yantis relied on the serving of Jayna Bevill in Game 1 as they went on a 12-point run to take a 15-4 lead as Bevill had six aces during the run. She also had an assist, nine kills and one block in the match.

Game 2 was a back-and-forth affair for both teams as there were seven ties during the game before Scarlett Tarno put the game away for Cumby on a kill off a Kasidy Huddleston assist for the 25-23 win.

Tarno led the way for the Lady Trojans with seven kills, three service points and two aces, while Huddleston had seven assists in the loss.

In Game 3, the Lady Owls went on a 6-0 run on the serving of Starla Burchfield as she recorded three aces during the run. She finished with five aces, seven assists, eight kills and one block.

The Lady Trojans battled back later in Game 3 to get to within 19-14 as Jenna Deeds blasted a kill off a Mary Ugalde assist during a four-point run of their own. Deeds had three kills, five service points and three aces in the contest, while Ugalde had seven points, two aces, 10 assists and six kills.

The Lady Owls jumped out to an 8-1 lead in Game 4 as Jamie Gilliland, Bevill and Burchfield played a key role in the early start. Gilliland had four service points, and Burchfield and Bevill each had a kill.

Ugalde had the only kill for the Lady Trojans in Game 4 as Erin Templeton and Tarno also had aces in the final game. Templeton had four points, six kills and one ace on the night for the Lady Trojans.

Isabel Reyna had two aces, nine kills and one block for the Lady Owls, as teammate Esther Fernandez had four assists and two kills, and Christina Bean had four aces and seven kills.

Magness said he is impressed with the way the team is playing at this point of the season and said when North Hopkins comes around the team should be ready.

"We need to keep our momentum going forward. We are playing better right now, and most of the teams that we have played were 2A and 3A teams," the coach said. "North Hopkins will probably be one of the toughest teams in the district."
