From Staff Reports

Sept. 7, 2005 - WILLS POINT - The SSHS tennis team made a strong showing against the Wills Point Tigers on Tuesday, taking a 16-6 victory.

The Wildcats (2-1) went 2-1 in boys doubles, 6-1 in boys singles, 2-1 in girls doubles, 5-3 in girls singles, and 1-0 in mixed doubles.

"That was a big win for us against Wills Point," said SSHS head tennis coach Susan Reynolds. "We have always played them very close, and our kids really stepped up and played some of the best tennis I've seen so far.

I was especially impressed with the girls' performance. I've been stressing the importance of getting ahead in our doubles matches and they really did that today even with a revamped line-up."

Brant Small, Jordan Horne and Frankie Ortiz won both their singles and doubles matches on the boys side., Lauren Longino, Trish Byron and Morgan McCormack did the same for the girls.

"Our guys struggled a little in the top doubles spots, but I'm not concerned because these guys always seem to bear down and win the key points when it counts," Reynolds said.

The Wildcats will get in a lot of tennis this weekend as they travel to Texarkana on Friday and Saturday for a tournament. They will play Kilgore at 8 a.m. Friday and Frisco at 1 p.m. On Saturday, they will face district foe Texas High at 8 a.m., and another match against an undetermined opponent that afternoon.

"This was an important win going into the Texarkana Tournament," Reynolds said. "I'm excited to get a look at Texas High before district play, and that will give us an idea of what we'll be facing in the district showdown."
