Rains pours it on Mount Vernon

Oct. 22, 2005 - EMORY - The Rains Wildcats bounced back from last week's loss to Commerce with a 36-13 win over the Mount Vernon Tigers Friday night at Wildcat Stadium. 

The Wildcats improved their District 11-3A record to 2-1, 6-2 overall,

with the win, while Mount Vernon drops to 1-1 in district (3-5 overall).

Tyler Jones proved more than Mount Vernon could handle as the Rains senior rushed 34 times for 186 yards and two touchdowns. As quarterback, Jones completed two pass for 60 yards and a touchdown in six attempts.

In each of their wins this season, Rains has gained more than 300 yards of total offense. Friday night, the Wildcats gained 397 yards while limiting Mount Vernon to just 225 yards of offense.

MV quarterback Justin Drabble accounted for must of their yards rushing with 81 yards on 10 carries and throwing for 94 yards and a touchdown on 9-of-18 passing and one interception.

Rains took the early lead with an 18-play drive that was capped with a

4-yard touchdown run by Jones. Mount Vernon answered two plays later with a 58-yard touchdown run by Drabble. Landry McGonagill added the point-after kick to even the score at 7-7 at the end of the first quarter.

Rains retook the lead late in the second quarter on a 5-yard run by Jones to take a 14-7 lead at the half.

The Wildcats increased their lead to 21-7 on the opening possession of the second half. Jones found Aaron Combs all alone in the Mount Vernon secondary for a 56-yard scoring completion. The touchdown capped a drive in which the Wildcats had two touchdowns called back on penalties.

Mount Vernon responded with a 58-yard scoring drive that was capped by a 7-yard touchdown pass from Drabble to Chris Bonner. The point-after kick failed leaving a 21-13 score.

Rains wrapped up the third quarter scoring with a 35-yard touchdown run by Jones. Derek Hurst added his fourth point-after kick for the night to give Rains a 28-13 lead heading into the final period.

Mandel Christian gave the Wildcats their final points of the game with a

16-yard touchdown run with 6:04 remaining in the game. Jones successfully

converted the 2-point run to make the final score 36-13.

Rains finished the game with two rushers eclipsing the century mark. Jones rushed for 186 yards and Christian rushed for 125 yards on 17 carries.

Friday night Mount Vernon hosts the Winnsboro Red Raiders while Rains has the week off.
