Oct. 12, 2005 - BIRTHRIGHT - The No. 7-ranked North Hopkins Lady Panthers swept the season series against the Cumby Lady Trojans Tuesday night at Pete Long Gymnasium.

After a five-game win earlier in the season, the Lady Panthers won in three games 25-13, 25-12, 25-13 to improve to 26-3 on the year and 6-0 in District 19-A.

"They looked so awesome tonight and they were playing with so much intensity," said NHHS head coach Danna Lewis. "I have never seen them hit the ball as hard as they hit the ball in the game tonight."

NH jumped out to an early 10-3 lead in Game 1 as Tashona Berry blasted a kill off an assist from Meagan Baxter, who finished the match with 24 assists, eight service points and two aces.

Cumby got as close as 10-5 in the first game as senior Scarlett Tarno slammed a kill off a Mary Ugalde assist but could not get any closer.

Later in Game 1, the duo of Baxter and Katy Williams extended the Lady Panthers' lead to 21-9 as Williams slammed home her sixth kill in the game. Williams finished with 19 kills, seven service points, four aces and two blocks for the Lady Panthers.

In Game 2, the Lady Trojans came out flat as North Hopkins jumped out to an early 5-0 lead with Williams recording four kills during that run.

North Hopkins extended their Game 2 lead to 15-3 as Williams nailed an ace before Mary Ugalde knocked down one of her three kills in the game for the 15-4 deficit. Ugalde had four assists and two blocks for Cumby.

Down 22-6 in Game 2 after a kill from Erin Templeton, Tarno then went on a run of her own with four aces during a six-point run to make the score 23-12 and Ugalde came up with a block on an attempted kill from Holli Argenbright.

Sabra Thomas then rounded out the game for North Hopkins with back-to-back aces for the 25-12 finale.

In Game 3, Cumby battled early to tie the game at 8-8, but then North Hopkins went on a 4-0 run on kills by Tashona Berry and Ebbonye Johnson and an ace from Berry.

Cumby was able to cut the deficit to two points at 13-11 when Lady Panther Ashley Hooten went into the net on her serve, but could not get any closer as North Hopkins went on another 4-0 run behind Johnson and Williams.

Williams wrapped up the Game 3 win on a cross court kill for the 25-13 win after Karen Lacey cut the deficit to 11 points at 24-13 on a kill from Ugalde. Lacey finished with two kills, two points and two aces.

North Hopkins' Johnson finished the game with seven kills, 11 points and three aces, while teammate Berry had two aces, eight points and six kills.

The Lady Panthers play Miller Grove on Friday. The Lady Hornets will be trying to stop North Hopkins' winning streak at nine games.

"We play Miller Grove Friday night and we need to keep the same intensity that we had tonight against Cumby so that when we hopefully make the playoffs we will be fine for the rest of the season," Lewis said.
