Wildcat tennis takes 15-6 win over Wills Point
From Staff Reports

Oct. 5, 2005 - The Sulphur Springs tennis team continued their consistent play Tuesday afternoon with a 15-6 victory over the Wills Point Tigers at the SSHS tennis courts in preparation for the Region II meet Oct. 28-29 at Southlake.

"This was one of the strongest performances I've seen by our kids all year," said SSHS coach Susan Reynolds. "To be this consistent at this time of the year is encouraging and with the exception of a couple of matches I was overall extremely pleased. "

The Wildcats were scheduled for play Kilgore next week, but after the cancellation by Kilgore, Reynolds said she is having a hard time finding another match before regional.

"I'm giving the kids a little break but we will be working hard and focusing on bettering our performance at regionals last year," the coach said of their consolation championship.

On the boys side, all three of the SSHS doubles teams won their matches with only one going to a tiebreaker as Brant Small and Jacob Harris won 1-6, 6-2, 10-6 over Curtis and Mooning. Ryan Thompson and Landon McCaig and the team of Blake Holly and Jordan Horne won in straight sets.

In singles action, SSHS took all but two of the singles matches as McCaig, Harris, Horne, Holly and Cameron Mitchell were all victorious.

On the girls side, Sulphur Springs won two-of-three matches. The teams of Aly Jackson/Lauren Longino and Kendall Smith/Morgan McCormack won in straight sets.

In singles, SSHS took four of the seven matches during the event as McCormack, Jackson, Crystal Figueroa and Trish Byron were victorious.

"Wills Point is a team that you have to stay on top of or they will run away with some matches, but our players put away the points at just the right time," Reynolds said.
