Nov. 28, 2005 - Graham Northcutt made the long trip to North Carolina worth it on Saturday.
Northcutt, a junior at Sulphur Springs High School, ran the best race of his career to win the Junior Division of the Foot Locker Cross Country South Regional, held at McAlpine Creek Park in Charlotte, NC.
He ran the 3.1-mile course in 15 minutes, 52 seconds, the fastest time of his career on a 5K course. The race brought together 264 of the top runners in a 14-state southern region.
Northcutt, who is a two-time state qualifier in cross country, was in about 10th place at the one-mile mark, moved up to seventh after another half-mile, and was in third place when the lead group went into a wooded area. When the pack emerged from the woods, Northcutt was in the lead with about a half-mile to go.
He outsprinted the competition to beat Bryan Downey of The Woodlands by four seconds.
"He ran the best time he has all year," said Andy Holt, Northcutt's coach at SSHS. "It's a great time for him."
By winning the race, Northcutt was named First Team All-South Region. Last year as a sophomore, he placed 22nd and was a Third Team honoree.
Holt said next year, Northcutt will run in the Elite Division, from which the top 10 qualify for the national race in San Diego.
Northcutt, the son of Eddy and Karen Northcutt, was competing in North Carolina with his club team, the Metroplex Striders.
