Area Basketball: Cumby boys, North Hopkins and Yantis boys post victories

Nov. 22, 2005 - In Monday night basketball action, the Cumby boys were victorious over Greenville Christian, North Hopkins took care of Saltillo in a double-header, and the Yantis boys posted a victory over Fruitvale.

The Cumby varsity and junior varsity girls both lost their games to Greenville Christian at home.


BOYS

Cumby 79, Greenville Christian 27

CUMBY - Jake Petty had a game-high 17 points, one rebound, three steals and two assists for the Cumby Trojans, while brother Josh had 11 points, one rebound and three assists in their win over Greenville Christian.

Teammates Josh Rodriguez posted a double-double with 12 points, 11 rebounds, four steals and four assists, Michael Cross had 12 points and nine rebounds, and Justin O'Mara had 11 points, three rebounds, three steals and one assist.

Greenville Christian was led by Neel with 11 points.

Yantis 66, Fruitvale 46

FRUITVALE - The Yantis Owls had three players in double figures as T.J. Moreland and Jeremy Hurley each scored 17 points in the victory.

Moreland finished with 17 rebounds and three blocks, while Hurley had 10 boards, five steals, five assists and two blocks.

"Moreland had the best game of his career and Hurley gave us another solid game," said Yantis coach Harold Gilbreath.

Teammate Chris Thompson had 15 points and six boards, and Jordan Davis had seven points.

"Another sophomore, Jordan Davis continues to improve and did a good job for us," the coach said.

Fruitvale was led by Ben Cox with 21 points and Will Hayden with 10 points.

Yantis (4-1) is on the road at Miller Grove tonight.

BIRTHRIGHT - Fresh off a championship in the Saltillo tournament, the North Hopkins Panthers got double-digit scoring from five players. Steven Crocker scored a game-high 19 points, Cory Johnson added 16 , Dustin Clements had 11 points, and Roger Sancho and J.P. Whittle had 10 points each.

"We came out real aggressive on defense the first quarter and scored 20 points in a 3:30 span at the end of the quarter," said North Hopkins coach Steve Drummond.

B.J. Hankins led Saltillo with 10 points.

The Panthers (5-0) will play their fifth game in six days tonight at Avinger.

BIRTHRIGHT - The North Hopkins Lady Panthers held Saltillo under 10 points in three of the four quarters Monday night.

North Hopkins had a game-high 24 points 13 rebounds, five assists and five steals from senior Katy Williams, eight points, two rebounds, four assists and two assists from Jessi Mannis, and five points, three rebounds and one steal from Nancy Castro.

Saltillo had a team-high 16 points, 11 rebounds and one steal from Winter Stevens, Emily White had nine points, and Chloe Roberts had four points, four rebounds, four assists and one steal.

CUMBY - The Cumby Lady Trojans dropped to 2-3 on the year with a loss to the Greenville Christian Lady Eagles Monday night.

Cumby was down 24-23 at intermission and was outscored 23-12 in the second half.

Cumby's Mary Ugalde had a game-high 14 points, while teammate Scarlett Tarno had nine points.

Ashley Flint led Greenville Christian with 14 points, and Ashley Draughn had 11 points.
