North Hopkins boys and Saltillo girls win Saltillo Invitational Tournament

Nov. 21, 2005 - SALTILLO - The North Hopkins boys and Saltillo girls wrapped up the Saltillo Invitational Tournament on Saturday with victories in the championship games.

North Hopkins scored 38 points in the second half of its game to overcome an eight-point Miller Grove lead at halftime for a 66-61 win. In the girls game, Saltillo held Avery to single-digit scoring in each quarter for a 47-32 victory.

In other games in the boys bracket, Como-Pickton defeated Saltillo, 38-28, and Yantis overpowered Cumby in the consolation final, 63-41.

In the girls bracket, Como-Pickton beat DeKalb, 50-43, for third place, and Cumby defeated Yantis, 51-31, in the consolation final.


Boys

Championship

North Hopkins 66, Miller Grove 61

North Hopkins outscored the Hornets, 20-6, in the third quarter to turn a 36-28 halftime deficit into a 48-42 lead to begin the fourth quarter.

The Panthers had four players in double-figure scoring, led by J.P. Whittle with 13 points. Jake Cockrum scored 12 points, nine of them in the second half, while Steven Crocker added 11 and Dustin Clements 10.

Miller Grove also had four players score in double figures, as Oscar Delcastillo and Lucas Kerby both scored 13, and Grayson Wing and Cole Schoenky added 12 points each.

Como-Pickton 38, Saltillo 28

The Eagles outscored Saltillo 21-11 in the second half to break a 17-17 halftime deadlock.

Como-Pickton's Clayton Humphrey scored seven of his 10 points in the second half to lead all scorers. Bo Baxter and Ray Hayden added nine points apiece.

Humphrey scored five points in the third quarter and Baxter added four as Como-Pickton took a 28-22 advantage into the final stanza.

Saltillo received nine points from Miles Payne and Trey Thompson chipped in seven.

Consolation Final

Yantis 63, Cumby 51

Jeremy Hurley scored a game-high 25 points to pace the Owls to overcome a balanced scoring attack from Cumby.

Hurley hit three 3-pointers in the game and Jordan Davis added another for Yantis. Jarrod Brown scored 10 points, Cord Burnett added eight, and Davis and Colton Glenn each put in seven.

The Owls held Cumby to 15 points in the second half to overcome a 36-35 deficit.

Cumby was led in scoring by Josh Rodriguez with 17 points, while Jake Petty added 11.  Josh Petty contributed eight.

Winter Stevens and Emily White combined to score 36 points to lead Saltillo to the championship.

Steven scored 20 points, 13 of them in the first half. In the second half, it was White's turn as she bucketed 13 of his 16 points in the final period.

Avery was led in scoring by Alysha Varley and Shanthanie Williams with nine apiece.

Maci Kight and Courtney Dulude each registered double-doubles to lead the Lady Eagles to the win.

Kight, a freshman scored 22 points and grabbed 12 rebounds, while Dulude had 13 points and 15 rebounds for C-P. Each girls also had three steals apiece.

The game was tied at 40-40 after the end of regulation, then Dulude scored six points and Ashley Mowat added four in overtime.

DeKalb was led in scoring by Asia Thompson with 21 points.

Mary Ugalde scored 21 points and Karen Lacey added 13 for the Lady Trojans, who held off Yantis for the consolation championship.

Ugalde made the most of her trips to the free throw line, hitting 17-of-23 free throws. She scored 19 points in the first half. Cumby hit 20-of-31 from the charity stripe as a team.

Amanda Collins and Sarah Collins each scored six points to pace the Lady Owls.
